Welcoming the Holiday Season!
We often cherish this time of year, where we share gifts, cook holiday feasts, and make sure the children still believe in Santa, and the holidays. Creating the holiday spirit takes a lot of work. And this year feels different; the recent election may have left us feeling a disappointment that we will be living in a future we voted against.
We moved quickly from the election campaign, and its sense of optimism, to election results, which has left us with pessimism and uncertainty. But, it is important to remember that we remain powerful. Use holiday time to contribute as a family to a valued cause: write a supportive letter to an inspiring leader, volunteer, or donate to a favorite local charity.
As election analysis unfolds, remember that we can listen to and watch what keeps us informed, and what reinvigorates us. Engaging with post-election analyses and events can keep us current, but only focusing on the news can increase anxiety and decrease our ability to focus. Setting a timer when we are taking in anything related to the election and its aftermath is one way to limit our doomscrolling, and give us a cue to turn away. Our minds are energized with our favourite music, podcast, or movie.
When we are juggling holiday planning, cooking, work and family care, we may forget that we need support too. Talk to a friend or loved one to plan a daily check-in, to reflect on the day, or share a laugh. Or take a few minutes to write in a journal. These daily rituals can have a positive impact on our mental health.
This may also be a good time to reach out for support from a professional. Therapists, psychologists and mental health professionals have felt an increase in requests for support after the election.
It is important to maintain a sense of joy during the holiday season, and make space where we feel able to care for our families, loved ones, and for ourselves.
Remember, you are not alone, I am ready to connect and hold space for you.
